History
Our self-catering properties are full of history, this is where the properties get their names. Dating back to the early 1800's.
Lerwick walks, Douglas Sinclair is a recognised local historian with his main interest being Lerwick, his home town. He works as a tourist guide, specialising in guided walks of Old Lerwick. Douglas is a Regional Affiliate Member of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association.
As a boy Douglas played in the lodberries, closses and courtyards of Old Lerwick and was familiar with smugglers' tunnels and explored many of the ancient buildings, now demolished it’s within these lanes where you might be staying.

About Us
Luxury Apartments Shetland is a family run business and our aim is to provide all our guests with a wonderful home from home stay in the historic lanes of Lerwick.
Our own home, we purchased 30 years ago and we began the restoration process. We love the magic that bringing an old property back to life gives. The walls of historic buildings are full of stories, evoking the feeling that we are merely custodians caring for it for future generations.
The Bakers, we purchased 20 years ago and the house and shop below have had major restoration works during the last few years. The Watchmakers we purchased in 2014, after several failed bids over a number of years.
Today we divide our time between looking after our guests, the upkeep of the properties, running our furniture shop 'Irvine Interiors', and Leslie's building company 'Irvine Contractors'. Not surprising our days are wonderfully varied!

Shetland is home to one of Scotland’s most unique winter festivals, Up Helly Aa, which celebrates the islands Norse traditions. The procession begins with a spectacular parade of Viking warriors and guisers marching with flaming torches, before a longship is set alight.
However, during the summer months’ visitors can learn the history about this fascinating tradition at the Up Helly Aa Exhibition in Galley Shed, which roots can be traced back to the 1880s. The exhibition contains information on the history of Up Helly Aa with many photographs documenting the event. There is also an exhibition of Jarl Squad suits from the previous 10 years on display along with various other suits used by squads participating in the festival.
“We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay in The Watchmakers. The apartment has been beautifully restored and offers an excellent standard of accommodation and is furnished and equipped to the highest standard. It is located in a charming lane off the main street in Lerwick and is ideally placed to take advantage of the town’s facilities. We will definitely return.”
"Just wanted to let you know how much we all enjoyed our long term stay at 12 Mounthooly street (The Bakers). The House is of the highest standard with each bedroom having full ensuite facilities, TV’s, luxurious beds and good furniture. The kitchen facilities are top quality including fridge freeze, over/grill, microwave and dish washer. We spent many nights in the cosy lounge watching TV. The house was always warm and inviting with good décor and kept in top quality condition thanks to the daily service. Great location in the centre of everything including bars and restaurants. If and when we return to Shetland rest assured we will be in touch."
“Our wonderful sojourn in Shetland was totally enhanced by our delightful stay in 'The Watchmakers', 4 Law Lane Lerwick, which ticked every box you could think of - beautifully.
The attention to detail in this characterful bijou holiday home is simply second to none with everything, from facilities to utilities being very well and thoughtfully catered for and topped by lovely decor throughout which creates the perfect ambience. So good to have a great day out but to look forward to coming 'home' too!
From our warm welcome to our very reluctant departure we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay and can't wait till the next time.”
“We had a great stay at the "Baker's"... Plush inside, and at a prime location in Lerwick centre, it will certainly be our first choice for future visits!”
